The Jewels
Diane’s inspiration for “The Jewels” at The Rise housing complex comes from a study of Armillary Spheres, which show Earth’s planets revolving around the sun. The message of the “The Jewels is to set a pinpoint for change, as when one rises, we all rise.”

Two large illuminated sculptures mark a very important corner of the New Tacoma landscape. Each sphere is adorned with glass like a giant jewel, and illuminated in the center with a lamp that comes on from dusk-to-dawn. The thick cast glass sparkles in the sunlight, glows in our grey skies, and dazzles after dusk. Contrasted by architecturally weathered steel armature, “The Jewels,” create a sense of elegance, permanence and playfulness. The project was completed in 2020 and the artwork was commissioned by the Tacoma Housing Authority.

Standing approximately 18 feet tall, the tallest jewel pin has two stacked globes. The larger is 6’ in diameter, the smaller below it is 3’ diameter. Centered in each sphere is an antiqued mirrored globe, which has a lamp inside on a dusk-to-dawn timer. The second jewel pin is approximately 15’ tall, and has a 4’ diameter sphere. It also has an illuminated antiqued mirrored globe within it.
